Cummins Diesel Generator Set: Causes & Solutions for Low/No Oil Pressure
(1) Fault Symptoms
Normal oil pressure range: 0.25–0.5MPa (refer to OEM manual). Pressure below this range or zero gauge reading indicates a malfunction.
(2) Root Causes
Primary factors: Insufficient oil volume, low viscosity, or severe leakage.
① Faulty pressure regulator:
Incorrectly adjusted low pressure
Damaged/weak relief valve spring
② Low oil level or leaks:
Insufficient oil in sump
Loose/cracked oil line fittings
③ Oil dilution:
Contamination by diesel/water
Degraded viscosity (incorrect grade or overheating)
④ Flow obstructions:
Clogged oil cooler/filter
Blocked oil pump pickup tube or screen
⑤ Excessive clearances:
Worn bearings/crankshaft journals causing leakage
⑥ Oil pump failure:
Gear wear or improper assembly
(3) Troubleshooting Steps
Step 1: Adjust/Replace Regulator
Calibrate relief valve to OEM specs
Replace weak/damaged springs
Step 2: Verify Oil Volume & Lines
Refill to dipstick "Full" mark
Tighten/replace leaking fittings
Step 3: Check Oil Quality
Compare with fresh oil viscosity
Step 4: Clear Blockages
Flush oil cooler & primary filter
Clean pickup screen and suction pipe
Step 5: Inspect Clearances
Measure bearing/journal gaps
Replace oversize components per tolerance charts
Step 6: Oil Pump Diagnosis
Disassemble and check gear wear
Rebuild/replace if backlash exceeds 0.15mm
