Understanding Diesel Generator Load Management
- Shutdown Procedure
To safely disconnect a generator from the system:
- Verify Load: Ensure remaining generators can handle the redistributed load.
Warning: If disconnection causes overload, shed non-critical loads first.
- Neutral Grounding: Confirm at least one active generator has a grounded neutral.
- Load Transfer: Gradually shift load to other units (follow parallel operation protocols).
Circuit Breaker: Open the generator’s main breaker.
Cooldown: Run generator at no-load for 5 minutes before shutdown.
2. Post-Startup Checks
Never perform maintenance on a running generator.
Oil Pressure:
If no pressure within 5 seconds, shut down immediately and inspect.
Warmup:
Set governor to low idle (takes minutes to stabilize).
Check for leaks/vibrations during "walk-around inspection."
3. Load Application
(A) Engaging Unloaded Mobile Equipment
- Set governor to medium speed.
- Connect equipment without load.
- Confirm all gauges (generator & equipment) show normal ranges.
- Increase to high idle (full-load speed).
- Apply operational load gradually.
(B) Engaging Pre-Loaded Mobile Equipment
- Set governor to medium speed; verify stable parameters.
- Shift to high idle.
- Synchronize and connect load.
